More than a Walk

One year ago, I heard words that changed everything for me and my family.

This weekend, I walked.

For myself.
For the women still fighting.
For those we’ve lost.
And for a future where fewer people have to hear those words.

The steps felt heavy at times -  but also full of strength, support, and purpose.

Thank you to everyone who donated, messaged, and stood beside me (literally and figuratively). It meant more than I can put into words.

This wasn’t just a walk. It was a reminder of how far I’ve come 💗

Please help me, help the Perkins.

My Updates

My Walk for Women's Cancer

On Saturday 2nd May, I'll be walking 14km as part of the New Town Toyota Walk for Women's Cancer.

Last year I was diagnosed with breast cancer and it changed everything - for me and for my family. There were days when I couldn’t do anything, when simply getting out of bed felt impossible. There were appointments, treatments, and moments of uncertainty that are hard to put into words. Even now, the effects of that year are still part of my everyday life.

I would have loved to do the full 35km walk, but the side effects I’m currently experiencing mean I won’t be able to manage that this year. I’m hopeful that next year I’ll be able to take on the full distance, but for now, 14km is my challenge and every step matters.

This walk is my way of turning all of that into something positive. I’m walking to raise vital funds for women’s cancer research at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, because no woman should have to face this alone and every donation helps researchers find better treatments, earlier diagnoses, and, hopefully, a future where cancer stops with us.

If you can, I’d be so grateful for your support. Every step I take on May 2 is for the women I love, the women who have supported me, and for anyone who might face this in the future.

Thank you for being part of this with me.

Ten Months Later

Yesterday I was back at the breast clinic for my follow-up mammogram and ultrasound.

It's been 10 months since my last mammogram, when they first detected my breast cancer.  Walking back through those doors definitely stirred up a few memories.

The scans themselves are the easy part.  Now comes the part many people in this situation know all too well - the waiting. I now have a week before I receive the results, and in many ways that waiting period can be the hardest part.

Experiences like this are also a reminder of how important regular screening is.  Mammograms and check-ups aren't always comfortable, but they can make such a difference when it comes to early detection.

If there's one takaway I hope people get from this update, its a gentle reminder to stay on top of your health and book your screenings when they are due.

The Countdown is On!

The countdown is officially on with just 10 weeks to go.

Today I completed a 6km training walk, (woohoo!) the first of many.   I was pretty proud of myself too, considering I haven't walked that far since before I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It really felt like a quiet little milestone.

Stronger than I was. Grateful for where I am. And every step reminds me why this walk means so much.
