Cancer ends with me!
On Saturday, 3 May 2025, I’ll be walking 35km in the Walk for Women’s Cancer to raise much needed funds for the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. This event is about more than just the steps, it’s about hope, research, and ensuring that the women of WA – our mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and loved ones living with cancer stay with us for as long as possible.
Cancer changed our world in 2016. Our family gathered around the dinner table when dad shared the news that would forever shift our reality "It’s cancer." Before that day I was familiar with the big C word, admittedly maybe a little naive. I never would have thought it would creep into our family and turn our worlds upside down instantly.
My mum, at just 46 years old, had been diagnosed with HER2+ breast cancer. She immediately finished work and began an aggressive treatment plan, surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.
In 2019, our worst fears became reality. The cancer had metastasized to her brain. Mum endured two neurosurgeries in Perth before doctors told us there was nothing more they could do. But giving up wasn’t an option, we fought to get her to Sydney, where Dr Charlie Teo performed life-saving surgery, giving us more precious time with her.
Fast forward to today, and Mum continues to be a fighter. Her latest tumour has been deemed inoperable, and over the past two years, she has been part of an intense chemotherapy trial that has only recently become available on the PBS. The treatment is helping by shrinking and controlling the tumour, but the toll on her body has been immense. My dad is mum’s full-time carer and we are so grateful for everything he does for mum and our family. Despite the challenges thrown her way, mum always faces each hurdle with determination and a cheeky smile.
This is why I walk: for those who can't. I walk for Mum, for every woman fighting this battle, and for a future where no family has to endure this heartbreak.
