Do More: Be More
Some of you may already know that I have signed up to do the Harry Perkins Walk for Women’s Cancer Challenge on 27 April 2024. This will be my fifth walk and the second consecutive one that I will be doing in Vancouver!! Last year I walked 78km on the day, which I will admit was mentally more challenging than the previous year’s 77km (which I did in Perth with all the other walker’s and incredible Harry Perkins support crew). I have not decided how far I will walk this year, but I do plan to walk for the whole day and as far as I can go before midnight!! I have started the training and I can tell you that in reality, the 2-3 months of unrelenting training is a lot harder than the actual walk day. I can also tell you that the support I receive from family, friends and colleagues is one of my main drivers and the inspiration I draw from to keep going.
Every year people ask me “why do you walk so far? - you know you don’t have to!!” There are many reasons why but suffice to say that it is my metaphor for representing how far I am prepared to go for this cause which I strongly believe in. Together with that, there are a few other notable reasons: 1. I received so much first class care when I was diagnosed with breast cancer some 8 years ago. This truly is a major reason why I am still here (and continuing to ruffle as many feathers possible). By doing this walk and pushing my limits, it is a way for me to pay it forward and give back. 2. I now fully understand what it means and feels like to be affected by this disease. For me there has to be a positive reason for my journey, part of my raison d’etre if you like, and I really want to use my experience, knowledge and attributes to help others. 3. Largely because my whole outlook on life changed and I found myself wanting to do more and be more.
Someone we all know and love has been/and or will be affected by this disease. How well they overcome it will depend on the quality of their medical care which is underpinned by medical research. If we want better outcomes in the future, then we need to focus on more research.
And so this is my reason for writing to you; please support me and the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research in any way you can. If you would like to donate, my link is attached, if you would like to train with me that would be awesome too and if you can wish me well, that would be so warmly appreciated.
Thank you all from all of me!!
Please help me, help the Perkins.
