Fighting cancer takes many steps
In January 2020, I lost a breast to cancer. By March, I’d lost my hair. In April 2024, I lost the other breast. In January 2026, I lost my ovaries.
Cancer attacked while I was expecting a baby. It attacked while the world was battling Covid. It did not care that I had a toddler to raise.
It disfigured my body, it left scars in many places, it took the parts of me that people use to describe a woman.
It turned my body into one that didn’t belong to this world: a hair and nipple-free, scarred, pregnant-bellied, steroid-bloated, chemo-ravaged, raw-from-radiation-burns body I could not stand to watch in the mirror, fearing that catching its glimpse would somehow turn the spell irreversible.
But I was one of the lucky ones. I’m scarred, I’m damaged, and I’m missing precious parts of Me. But I’m still standing, and that’s why, in May, I’ll walk 35km and raise $500 to support the fight against women’s cancer. For the ones who came out on the other side, damaged like me, for the ones who are fighting, and for the ones aren’t here to walk with us 👊🏻
Donate, if you can; but if you’ve read so far, my message to you is to look after your body. Give up smoking, skip the weekly drink, go vegetarian most days of the week, drag yourself to the gym. We only get one body, and I’ve lost enough parts of mine to know how precious it is ♥️
Please help me, help the Perkins.
