Cancer ends with me!
On Saturday 27 April 2024, I’m taking on a 42km walk to raise funds for cancer research for the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research. There is so much more to be done to ensure that the women of WA – our mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and loved ones – living with cancer stay with us for as long as possible. The Perkins is dedicated to helping the women in our lives. They’re focused on pioneering medical breakthroughs and discovering new treatments for this disease.
We've all been affected by cancer in some way, whether it's through a friend, family member, or on a more personal level. For us, in 2016, our family received the shattering news: cancer had entered our lives. At age 46, my Mum was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer and within the year it took a devastating turn - it metastasized to her brain, prompting a series of four neurosurgeries across hospitals in Perth and Sydney, including Prince of Wales Hospital where she underwent lifesaving treatment under the care of Dr. Charlie Teo.
Yet, despite the challenges thrown her way, mum faced each hurdle with determination and a cheeky smile. Fast forward to the present, and we find ourselves facing yet another cruel twist in this journey - her recent diagnosis reveals that the tumour in her brain is now deemed inoperable by her doctors in Perth. This past year has been yet another relentless battle as mum has undergone a vigorous chemotherapy trial. While the treatment has shown signs of promise in shrinking and controlling the tumour’s growth, it has put a heavy toll on her body. But through it all, she has remained resilient, a true fighter, and my ultimate role model.
It is her courage and strength that inspires me to take action. That's why, in 2024, alongside my supportive friends I am participating in the Walk for Women's Cancer. Mum and Dad are planning to join me at the end of the walk where I will be proud to help mum across the finish line so she can receive my medal, because she is the true champion in this journey.
Together, we can make a difference and together, we can ensure that no one ever has to face the agony of hearing those two dreadful words, "It's cancer." Through raising vital funds for research, treatment, and support services, we can pave the way for a brighter future.
